Aren&#8217;t they already thinking critically?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Isn&#8217;t critical thinking just writing longer answers?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Why does every tutor suddenly claim to teach it?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is both more uncomfortable and more reassuring.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critical thinking is one of the most important skills students need today. But contrary to what many people assume, it is not something children simply &#8220;pick up&#8221; as they get older. It can be taught. It can be practised. And it can transform the way students approach learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/youngscholarz.com\/\">Young Scholarz<\/a>, we believe this is the difference between students who merely know content and students who know what to do with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Critical Thinking, Really?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/youngscholarz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In simple terms, critical thinking is the ability to analyse information, evaluate evidence, consider multiple perspectives, and construct a reasoned argument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Critical thinking underpins almost everything <a href=\"https:\/\/ibo.org\/\">IB<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeinternational.org\/programmes-and-qualifications\/cambridge-upper-secondary\/cambridge-igcse\">IGCSE<\/a> students are expected to do.<\/p>\n<p>In the IB, it appears explicitly in <a href=\"https:\/\/ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/dp-core\/theory-of-knowledge\/\">Theory of Knowledge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/dp-core\/extended-essay\/\">Extended Essays<\/a>, and university-style discussions. Across the IGCSE curriculum, it drives Global Perspectives, literature analysis, source evaluation, and open-ended examination responses.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here&#8217;s what many students and parents miss:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critical thinking is not a subject-specific skill. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a way of approaching knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A student can memorise definitions, examples, and even model essays, yet still struggle when faced with an unfamiliar question. Then an exam asks:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;To what extent do technological solutions effectively address climate change?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, memorised knowledge isn&#8217;t enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student must decide what &#8220;to what extent&#8221; actually means. They must weigh competing viewpoints, evaluate limitations, prioritise evidence, and arrive at a justified conclusion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many students panic at this point. They begin writing everything they know rather than answering what the question actually demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn&#8217;t a content problem. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a thinking problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Neuroscience Tells Us<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25607 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/youngscholarz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/nuero-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brain systems involved in remembering information are not the same as those involved in evaluating and applying it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students revise through repetition alone, they strengthen pathways associated with recall. This is valuable. Memory matters. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But critical thinking engages the brain&#8217;s executive functions: the processes responsible for reasoning, decision-making, cognitive flexibility, and self-monitoring. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most important insight from learning science is this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The brain does not automatically convert knowing into understanding or understanding into application.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That transfer has to be trained. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The encouraging news is that our brains are remarkably adaptable.
